so this is '09

Are any of you feeling like I do right now? Like for 3 weeks you played and played, and had it in the back of your mind you would start getting stuff done as soon as the kids were back in school. And now that they are back in school you feel a little depressed and not at all productive. And now it's Friday and you aren't sure what you've accomplished this week, and you're wondering how did you ever believe the illusion that you could get a handle on things in a mere week? And how old are these left-overs anyway?

To top it off, I can't help feeling that my time was best spent sledding down hills and playing board games. Are we living our lives the way we should? My to-do list is just about as long as it was on Monday morning. My kids are stressed and tired. And I've taken to turning on the TV in the day just to have some background noise. And I know some of the food in the fridge is from 2008. Maybe that's why I'm feeling off.

On a random note, since I talk about the girls so much, here are the boys:

Berk wearing Sam's new hat, for a facebook profile photo shoot

Sam on the new unicycle, which is harder than it looks, if that's possible

I hope you're all adjusting to 2009 better than I am. Feel free to pass on your tips. Any good new year's resolutions? The top one on my list is "play more board games," followed by "have more fun."

oh brenda, i don't think i have ever known you to be unproductive! i am feeling just the opposite. this week i have been super productive because my time is short to accomplish everything i want to before the baby shows up, and who knows when that will be???! i was sick on sunday and monday, but tuesday came along and i was doing errands all day (and i felt it big time that night, probably did too much!) then i got the crazy notion in my head that i should potty train kawena yesterday.

so, this week has been an overload for me!

i am all for playing more boardgames this year! we got 4 new games for christmas and they are awesome! i don't know what kind of games you guys like, but you really should try puerto rico, powergrid, carcassone, and ticket to ride marklin edition. awesome, awesome strategy games! what games are you playing?

love berk's pic! i miss hearing your kids playing in your backyard!

My week exactly. Thanks for saying it so well. But fun times will come again. It's all good. And if you ever want to try the games Mahina mentioned, let me know. We have them all!

Yeah, that's kind of what it's been feeling like for me as well. As you've probably read in my blog already, we've been trying to amuse ourselves for the unexpectedly long vacation (due to snow and my neglecting to take most of my vacation days until December), so it's really felt like a long playtime that's finally over and we have to get back to real life of work and school.

To top it off, I can't help feeling that my time was best spent sledding down hills and playing board games. Are we living our lives the way we should?

To quote the long-running LDS PSA, "Family... isn't it about... time?" Of course there needs to be a balance here, and you can't neglect all the needful things you need to do, but I have to think taking some time to smother your family with time and attention before everyone has to get back to work will be a far more valuable experience than a couple of scheduled activities along the way of attacking a to-do list.

Resolution #3 for you: Spend more time with the Rawlins. We're a natural anti-depressant. :)

I am so amazed at your boys doing a unicycle! I would break my neck on the first go.

Sorry you are feeling unproductive. I would never put that word with you. Ever.

I kind of feel the same way. I kind of want the vacation to be a little bit longer with my kids and husband. I rather liked having everyone home and close together. I really realized that we spend too much time trying to get things done.
For instance, had we not been snowed in for so long we would have a spent a lot more time running errands and honestly wasting time. I realized that all of those these we would have been doing, except for a couple, were not needful and a supreme waste. My goal this year, to work hard on making our home the place you always want to be, a true refuge from the world, and just let go of all the things I use to think I needed to get done.

Yes! The transition back into productivity was rocky for me too.

And yes, our #1 goal for 2009 is to have more fun. A lot more. If we can remember how.

That hat is so stylie!

Love Berkeley's picture! And wow, a unicycle! That's most impressive.

You're right...we need to have more fun in our lives, and fewer pointless errands!

I got rid of some funeral potatoes today that were from the ward Christmas party a few weeks ago. Erik challenged me to a game of Stratego after church, and I'm happy to report I took him up on it. I learned you can have fun even if the rules flex during the game, and not to expose your marshal too early.

Berkeley had better be careful on line. Some crazy girl might track him down.

Last year my resolution was to write a 300 p. book (I had just begun writing so yeah I know it was stupid.) I kinda did. 35,000 words that won't help me.
This year I want to write a second draft type book. I should really slow down because Mom isn't to happy about my sleeping habits that have gotten...a bit bad. I'm thinking in the morning not sleeping in! I just don't get out of bed. And why get up when there's nothing I can choke down that will help me not feel hungry? Like the Orange I just ate.

I feel the same! I did fix the bath tub spout down stairs though so I have one thing done! Kate is with me right now and was really excited to see the picture of the cousins in the leaves. All four of them were pointed to and called Berkeley!

I agree, you are so NOT unproductive! I love that you spent so much "fun" time with your kids. I on the other hand couldn't wait for the nagging to end and school to begin. School is part of the Plan of Happiness! Or so I think.

So, the day the kids were supposed to start back to school we hopped a plane to Florida for another 8 days of extended fun. I know we are so bad have our kids miss 4 weeks and two days of school, but it was worth it! I am all for your "play more boardgames" and "have more fun" resolutions. But, now I am back to life, back to reality and it isn't so bad. We always have the weekends and I am so glad it's almost already here!
