that's just not natural

I am laying in bed sick today, catching up on "The Week," a favorite news magazine. They have a little piece on how monogamy is not really a natural part of our human makeup. Apparently, we aren't programmed to want to be with the same person day after day, week after week. Well, good job science, but I think that theory has been around for years.

The great part of the little article though, is the point that there are lots of things that feel natural that are not good for you, like eating bacon and smoking pot. And lots of things that are intensely difficult, like running a marathon, or staying married, that can only happen when we master our natural inclinations, subdue our natural self and commit. I am thankful for parents who have stuck it out, and now reap the benefits of loving companionship in their golden years. And I'm thankful for a husband who loves me after 17 years, even though it's not natural.

If any man will come after me, let him deny himself...

I think I might be wired differently! I can't imagine jumping around to different partners, never feeling secure and safe and really loved. I think saying that human beings aren't wired for monogamy is an easy excuse for justifying immoral behavior. I think most human beings crave the idea of finding "the one". Wow, am I so grateful for the knowledge that families can be together forever. And that knowledge actually makes me feel genuinely happy and even excited. I too am grateful for my hubby-almost 13 years for us and still going strong:0)

I think that is what Mosiah 3:19 (Natural Man) is talking about.

I think the article meant that it's not natural wanting to be with anyone other than Brenda. I love you!

Great post, and I love the comments so far. Tonya is right that saying it's unnatural is just an excuse to be immoral. And my granddaughter's scripture that now is in her heart because she's memorized all 25 scripture mastery scriptures says it all. The Spirit entices us toward monogamy.

I also think Satan would like us to get divorced and reap the misery that causes. Whereas the Spirit would entice us to repent and "fix" ourselves by asking humbly, "Lord, what wouldst thou have me do?"

I like what everyone has said and would agree that being with multiple people is not natural, it is non-commital and the easy way out and life was never meant to be easy.
