I read what Stephanie was up to 10 years ago (which is exactly what I was up to 20 years ago--thinking about boys). Her post and the turn of the new year puts me in mind of the Brenda of 1998. She was really something, I tell you.So here goes--five things I was doing 10 years ago:
1. Mothering Berkeley, the most beautiful three-year-old boy the world had ever seen.
2. Teaching English 115 at BYU, which was probably the most educational and most fulfilling part of my master's program. I always had one or two classes of 20 shiny, eager freshmen to greet me each day. It was great.
3. Finishing and defending my Master's Thesis, entitled "Utopian Marriage in Nineteenth-Century
America: Public and Private Discourse." I explored three communities which held alternatives to monogamy as their ideal: the Shakers, the Oneida Community, and the Mormons. I made a few waves with this. More like ripples, I guess.4. Singing in the SLC-based alternative rock band, Gathering Osiris. These are the pictures from our second CD.
5. Moving to Oregon.
In fact, during the course of about 3 weeks I finished that CD, defended my thesis, played my last show with the band, packed and moved--all while having morning sickness.
So 1998 was a big year for me. I'm loving life in 2008, though. I'd like to go back for a day, but only a day.
I should add that Mike defended his thesis the day after I did, and he was also involved in the packing and moving. And he was a pretty good roadie and groupie. And an excellent dad. Kudos to him for putting up with schizophrenic Brenda.

Yep...it's all like she said. Funny though, it didn't really feel as crazy at the time as it does looking back. What will we be doing in the next ten years? - Mike
Holy cow! Look at you! You are one hot mama!! I never knew you were in a band. That is so cool. I'd love to listen to it sometime. Why not as prelude music in primary on Sunday? : )
I knew you got a masters but I never knew your thesis. That sounds SO interesting.
You're smart AND sexy. That Mike is a lucky man!
I was up with my kids in the middle of the night last night, so what better thing to do then check out blogs, and to my pleasant surprise, there was a new post from you. And a good one at that! I then spent from about 3:00-3:30am googleing Gathering Osiris, where I found some clips from the cd, here's the web site for those interested http://www.geocities.com/missionweb/osiris/noframe/summer.htm
You are seriously the coolest person I know. I remember Heidi telling me about her new friend in Oregon who used to be in a band and has a cd. But just so you know, I think you're much cooler now. : )
I'm not worthy! Sorry, the 90's talk brought that out of me. Wow, You were doing some pretty amazing stuff! And still are! I've got to hear those cds.
I guess a wierd time warp happened when I knew you during high school and then caught up with you again 3 years ago in Beaverton. I didn't know you were in a band. VERY cool. Time just goes by and how quick we are loose track of it.
Wow, I am so impressed! Lead singer in a band, so cool.
Now that all of your kids have tasted the mountains, we should totally go up to Meadows and shred! :-)
This is so wierd. I posted a comment and it isn't here. I must have done something wrong before. Anyway, I love hearing about your days in the band. You are so talented Brenda.
Wow, that is a total amazing!
i never knew you were in a band! however it doesn't surprise me with your amazing voice! what a sexy mam you were! i would love to hear your cd!! bring it to the next girls night and then we can all sample some of the talent from 10 years ago brenda!
OKAY, I just looked at the link Stephanie found and that IS the old official Gathering Osiris website, but the sound quality is lacking. Feel free to request a cd from me though!
We all want one Brenda! Just burn it. Or is that a terrible thing to say to the lead singer of a band?
Brenda, I'm so glad you found my blog so I could find yours! I am a HUGE fan of the 1998 Brenda and am positive I'll be a huge fan of the 2008 version as well.
