quiz time

Another funny little thing I started doing in September (along with but not related to blogging daily) is collecting troubling bits of grammar and usage. If something is somewhere on the scale of questionable to appalling, I quickly write it in the "notes" section of my phone. I've even had to pull over to do so, or dictate to a child-passenger. It's becoming a passion.

A couple of these sentences are correct, but most are not. Some may be debatable.

QUIZ
In your comment, write the numbers belonging to sentences you feel or know to be incorrect. You don't have to explain why, but you are welcome to.

1. To the people that say "take," I say "give."

2. That is going to be you and I someday.

3. His family were gathered all around him.

4. He laughed at the girl, who he now had a low opinion of.

5. What do you want to revenge?

6. I am thankful to have a family who supports me.

7. The main parts in the play went to her and Becky.

8. Each person should take a page, then they can share their favorite part.

9. If she was well, she could travel.

10. Of the two books you read last week, which did you enjoy most?

I promise to do an "answer key" post soon. Or maybe a whole series of grammar rule posts, as I come to learn how to explain the answers myself! Wouldn't that be FUN???

2,3,4,7, and 10 are the ones of which I wouldn't protest if corrected.

Can you do another list of nice words that irregardless of common usage should be avoided a lot?

You're hilarious!! You should probably stop reading my blog NOW. I don't want to be the example of bad grammar. I'm sure you'd find LOTS of it! I'll be reading your posts and hopefully I'll improve!

As a homeschool teacher I am always worried about broadcasting my ignorance. I'll play anyway.

3,4,5, and 8. 2 and 7 are awkward but I think they may be correct.

1 feels like it should read, "who" instead of "that".

2 I->me

3 all around or all gathered?

4 ah, that poor "of" left all dangly there at the end.

5 revenge isn't a verb.

6 seems awkward... "to have a family who support me" if you are using 'family' as a plural like the British to more than we do with group names, or "a family which supports me" if you want 'family' to be singular. Or something like that.
I think.

9 if she were well...

10 most enjoy, maybe?

What she said. ;^)

P.S., I find the tricks to avoiding such, fun. (Add that sentence to your list.) :) Such as leaving out the other one in the "you and I" and then you know it's "me" and thinking "hern" when I hear 'her and'. P.S., seven comments and no one mocked each other. How civil. You guys must not read the bloggernacle. Smart people!

I'm afraid to comment! The stakes are too high! Can I just love reading them?
